The beaten participant

The beaten participant, with the blood on his face and shirt, leans on the tree during the funeral procession on the Kyiv-based Sofievska Square(Tuesday, July 18, 1995). The soldiers of "Berkut" and Internal Army broke up people by means of gas and batons. The people gathered on the Sofievska Square, where in the temporary grave was buried the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church (Kyiv Patriarch) Vladimir Romanyuk. The believers demanded to bury the Patriarch in the St.Sofia Cathedral, while the Kyiv City Authorities insisted on the burial on the Kyiv-based Baykovoe cemetery.
