The criminal case against ex-director of the Kiev zoo Svetlana Berzina referred to prosecutors for further investigation.

On April 21, the Kiev Prosecutors' Office opened a criminal case against the former director of the Kiev Zoo communal enterprise Svetlana Berzina on suspicion of abuse of office. As press-service Forum informs, on May 3, 2011, the head of the department of the protection of citizens' rights and national interests in the environmental field of Kiev Prosecutor's Office informed that by results of a check of a petition filed by representatives of non-government organizations, journalists and famous people, the Prosecutors' Office opened a criminal case against S.Berzina upon Article 191, Section 5 and Article 366, Section 2 of the Penal Code of Ukraine. Sanction of Article 191, Section 5 of the Penal Code (misappropriation, embezzlement of property or abstraction by abuse of office, committed on an especially large scale or by an organized group) foresees deprivation of freedom for a term of 7 to 12 years with confiscation of property or with deprivation of right to occupy certain positions or engage in certain activities for a term of up to three years.
