On Thursday, May 6, 2004 the fire happened at the ammunition depot of the South Operative Headquarters near the Phedorovka railway station of Melitopol district of Zaporozhye region. There were all the nomenclature of artillery ammunition of the Land Forces of the Ukraine Armed Forces. Near 10,000 residents of four neighbouring villages are evacuated to avoid victims. The oil storage has already caught fire. A part of gas pipeline has been destroyed. The number of victims ran up to 6 according to unchecked data. Shells of the “Grad” reactive mounts began to explode. It is expected that the depots with “Uragan” and “Smerch” shells will sun burn. The radius of fragment dispersion can reach 70 km. It is expected that the fire at the depots can continue from 3 to 7 days. In Energograd there is the Zaporozhskaya atomic power station in the distance of 40 km from the explosion epicentre. The Chief of Joint Staff of Armed Forces Alexander Zatinayko apologised to citizens from Minister of Defence and himself for the accident in the live broadcast of UT-1 channel.
