UNIAN FILE. Extermination of the last ICBM RS-22 launch control center near Ukraine's eastern town of Pervomaysk, Tuesday, October 30, 2001. Thursday, October 24, 2002 a ceremony was held to mark the final site restoration of the former SS-24 Intercontinental Ballistic Missile (ICBM) Base. Since the U. S. Defense Threat Reduction Agency issued a $40 million contract in 1997 to Bechtel National Inc. 49 ICBM silos and three underground launch control centers have been eliminated. The restored sites were turned over to the local community for agricultural use. The completion of the project coincides with the disestablishment of Ukraine's 43rd Rocket Army. The elimination process also met Ukraine's obligations under the START Treaty.
