Yuri Smirnov and Svyatoslav Piskun
Ukraine's Interior Minister Yuriy Smirnov, left, and General Prosecutor Sviatoslav Piskun demonstrate a bottle with Molotov cocktail at a news conference in Kiev Saturday, September 14, 2002, two days before opposition protests. A number of bottles were found by police in a car on the way to the capital, with numerous opposition leaflets, Smirnov said. Opposition forces expect thousands of Ukrainians to take to the streets of cities nationwide Monday to demand the ouster of embattled President Leonid Kuchma. The protests are timed to mark the second anniversary of the disappearance of crusading journalist George Gongadze that caused months of protests against Ukraine's president Kuchma, whom opposition leaders accused of involvement in the killing.
