A man dressed as Ivan Pidkova
A man dressed as the 16th century legendary Ukrainian Cossacks warrior leader Ivan Pidkova, a monument to Pidkova himself on the right, delivers his address to residents of the western Ukrainian city of Lviv, 544 km (337 miles) west of capital Kiev, during an outdoor performance Sunday, June 16, 2002. A performance was organized on the occasion of a historic event that took place 424 years ago when Polish King Stefan Batory, during the Polish period of Ukraine's history, ordered to cut off Pidkova's head. Many years later, the place of execution turned to be a downtown Lviv square named after Ivan Pidkova, and Cossacks' gunshots and a public prayer were to honor memory of Ukraine's national hero.
