Anatoliy Sobchak
The UNIAN Archive. Anatoly Sobchak. On the Sunday night, February 20, 2000 about 1 p.m. Mr Sobchak had died, 63, in the "Rus" Hotel, in Svetlogorsk, Kaliningradska obl. He died in the course of the acute heart insufficiency. Anatoly Sobchak was born on August 10, 1937 in Chita. In 1959 he had graduated from the Leningrad-based State University ( juridical faculty) and worked as a lawyer for 3 years. In 1982 he became the professor of the Leningrad-based University. In 1989 he was elected as the USSR People's Deputy. In 1991 -1996 - he is the S-Petersburg Mayor. In 1997 the Prosecutor's Office named him the witness on the case of the corruption in Petersburg, after what he had to leave for France. He came back after his former student - Vladimir Putin - was appointed as acting as President. The Democratic Russia Party appealed to the authorities to bury Anatoly Sobchak in the Alexandro-Nevskaya Lavra near the Galina Starovoytova's grave.
